Create a petition

If you feel strongly about an issue you may want to start or sign a petition, on either the UK Parliament website or Senedd website. You can also create non-parliamentary petitions, on sites like 38 Degrees or Change.org.

A petition is essentially a formal written request signed by one or more (but usually many) people appealing to those in power to make change. Petitions really do make a difference, they can’t easily be ignored and in relation to UK and Welsh Parliamentary petitions have to be responded to once they reach a certain number of signatories.

Petitions serve as a vital tool for young people to advocate for political change by aggregating public support behind specific issues or causes. Whether in the form of traditional paper petitions or digital platforms like Change.org, petitions enable individuals to express their concerns, demand action from policymakers, and demonstrate the breadth of public sentiment on particular issues.

Petitions provide a tangible demonstration of public support for a specific cause or policy change. When presented to decision-makers, petitions serve as a powerful advocacy tool, demonstrating the depth and breadth of grassroots support behind a particular issue. Elected officials may feel compelled to respond to petitions, either by implementing policy changes, initiating legislative action, or addressing concerns through other means.

While petitions alone may not guarantee political change, they serve as a critical starting point for advocacy efforts, providing a means for citizens to voice their concerns, hold leaders accountable, and drive meaningful progress on important issues.
